Between 1975 and 1979, the Khmer Rouge regime killed an estimated 1.7 to 2.5 million people. Nearly a quarter of Cambodia's entire population was wiped out in less than four years. Teachers, doctors, and educated professionals were systematically targeted and executed. An entire generation of knowledge, leadership, and opportunity was erased.
The Cambodia of today is not simply a poor country. It is a country rebuilding from near total destruction. The poverty, the lack of infrastructure, the barriers to education are not random. They are the direct and living aftermath of a genocide that ended less than 50 years ago. This generation is the one that either breaks the cycle or inherits it.

WHEN SURVIVAL MEANS RISKING YOUR LIFE BEFORE YOU TURN 18.
In rural Cambodia, extreme poverty often forces children out of school and into dangerous work simply to help their families survive. Near the Thai-Cambodian border, some boys entered active minefields to recover metal from unexploded landmines, selling the scrap for just a few dollars.
They were not driven by recklessness or thrill-seeking. They were driven by desperation.
Research conducted by Dr. Wade Roberts, founder of Become More, found a direct relationship between rising scrap metal prices and increased landmine tampering. As the value of recovered metal increased, so did the number of children willing to risk their lives to obtain it. The findings demonstrated a difficult reality: these boys were responding rationally to severe economic hardship and limited opportunities. When survival is at stake, dangerous choices can become the only choices available.

When families lack stable income, food security, or long-term support, girls in these villages face dangers that are harder to talk about but just as real. Cases exist where vulnerable girls become at risk of exploitation when there is simply no other path forward.
We at Become More, along with village leadership, have a goal of zero people human trafficked in the sponsored communities.
And even for girls who stay safe, something as simple as the absence of feminine hygiene products means missing a week of school every single month. Month after month, until school stops feeling possible at all. A sponsored student is a protected student and one who stays in class.
